Sunday 9th October 2011 UK Club Championships

On Sunday the best 4 teams in the UK competed for the title of UK Club Champions and Scotland’s amazing run of wins prevailed yet again with the Falkirk Cannons Coached by Gordon Archibald taking the top spot and Team Enigma taking 2nd place giving Scotland a magnificent 1st and 2nd. The Aircadet team the Raptors and the Hellcats from England came a creditable 3rd and 4th.

The heavily fancied Hellcats received devastating news as they were about to leave for the competition when they found out that they wouldn’t have the expected 7 players but would play the tournament with just 4 a tough ask but one that they took on without pause.
In their first game against eventual winners the Cannons, Hellcats team captain Sara Cooper received an injury and as a result of that they had to forfeit their second game against the Raptors due to not enough players on the court. However in their final game against team Enigma Sara played carrying a rested injury and led the team to a win.

The Cannons were dominant throughout their games taking control of the game with good possession of the balls and some unbelievable blocking it was obvious that a lot of work had been put in to ensure that they had a good chance of taking the title.

Well done to all teams concerned and let’s hope that next year’s games will be as exciting. But injury free.....

Game 1 Raptors  128   v 184   Enigma

Ripon Makes Rock-It-Ball History!

A North Yorkshire school which was established in 1555 made history again recently by embracing the future!  The old and the new joined forces as the historic Ripon Grammar School became the first Centre of Excellence for Yorkshire’s young sport Rock-It-Ball, widely described as ‘the fastest-growing sport on the planet.

Rock-It-Ball has enjoyed unparalleled growth since its launch in 2006, spreading rapidly into schools, colleges, universities, youth groups, the military, PCTs and spreading its tentacles into 20 countries of which ten now have National Governing Bodies.

The move to making Ripon Grammar School a Rock-It-Ball Centre of Excellence was spearheaded by Ripon’s Director of Sport, Helen Mackenzie who put forward the idea to the International Rock-It-Ball Federation. She arranged a meeting so that officers of the Federation and the England Rock-It-Ball Association could visit the facilities and meet the Headmaster, Martin Pearman and the Head of PE, Siobhan Gilfillan.

Following a successful meeting it was agreed that Ripon Grammar School would not only become the sport’s first Centre of Excellence but would also be appointed as the National Centre of Excellence for Rock-It-Ball.

CEO of the England Rock-It-Ball Association, Ian Crosby, was delighted: “This is fantastic.  What a wonderful venue – beautiful location, fantastic facilities that are central and easily accessible.  But most importantly it needs a champion who has the drive, vision and enthusiasm to make it succeed and Ripon certainly has that in Helen.  This is a fantastic day for both Ripon Grammar School and Rock-It-Ball – not only is this the first Centre of Excellence, it becomes our National Centre of Excellence. ”

Helen was also pleased with the outcome: “I was introduced to Rock-It-Ball about 3 years ago and played for the Easi-RockIts HellFighters in the League.  A successful lottery bid enabled me to introduce it into the 21 Ripon schools and the impact it has had so far has been phenomenal. I love how this sport caters for all abilities, including the children who don't normally get involved in competitive sport.  It is just so inclusive and I want Ripon to lead the way.  We have lots of things planned both for Ripon schools in general and for the National Centre of Excellence “

As the National Centre of Excellence, Ripon Grammar School will be instrumental in assisting the growth of the sport, will establish a local Rock-It-Ball club, host coaching conventions, international training courses and workshops, and will be the home of the England and GB squads.

History has been made again with the establishment of Rock-It-Ball's first Centre of Excellence which is going to be the National Centre of Excellence. We now wait for the confirmation from the Board of Governors which we believe will be a formality. Helen Mackenzie who is the Director of Sports for Ripon Schools has spearheaded the project on the schools behalf and met representatives from both ERIBA and the IRIBF to conclude negotiations. ERIBA CEO Ian Crosby said "Its great to see that there are people like Helen that have the vision to see the benefits of Rock-It-Ball" The facilities at the school are second to none and we hope to be using it for a multitude of events in the future.

The IRIBF complete the next link in the chain for administration with World Regional Associations, "Although 6 areas have been identified we believe that we will need to break them down as more countries come on board" said IRIBF Commissioner Craig Buttery

The Regions are Europe, America's, Africa's, GCC, Asia and Oceania, furthermore we are pleased to announce that we have the first 3 CEO's whose responsibility will be to develop Rock-it-Ball and organise competition in their region.

We must congratulate Carl Alsop (Europe), Ibrahim Elhadary (Africa's) and Andy Noddings (GCC) for their appointment as CEO's and wish them the best of luck in their efforts to drive our sport onward and upward.

Project Coach 20-50 is now up and running and the very first coaches have been qualified up in Falkirk, we now need to get more people involved and the IRIBF are looking for people willing to step up to the plate.

20-50 is a project that has been initiated to increase the numbers of both people qualified as Rock-It-Ball coaches and clubs/teams.

Historically we have qualified teachers and although this has created an awareness of our sport across the UK it has not provided us with exit routes for the kids that have tried the sport in schools.

So.... 20-50 is here to address that issue we are going to qualify 20 coaches in 50 area's UK wide free of charge. The stipulation for inclusion in 20-50 is that the people that we qualify then go on to set up their own clubs and liaise with local schools that may have already tried the sport but the pupils have had no way of taking the sport further.

So if you are in an area that wants to get people qualified please contact the IRIBF by email craig@iribf.org or by phone 07809 716423

May 3rd 2010

June 2007. The final of the inaugural Rock-It-Ball World Cup.  England are leading Scotland by 15 points at the beginning of the final quarter.  The Scots gradually catch up but with 120 seconds to go England are still hanging on – but then in the final seconds Scotland draw level and take the lead right at the death to snatch the World Cup from the grasp of tournament favourites England.

Almost three years on and the thought hurts as much as ever, only slightly assuaged by the England Youth team’s victory in the Youth World Cup in 2008, but with the first ever England-Scotland friendly we have the chance to start to heal the wound.

Since that demoralising defeat the English Rock-It-Ball Association has established a successful national program which resulted in the England Youth Squad’s World Cup victory and which is now preparing for the Youth and Senior World Cup tournaments in 2011 – however recently the senior squad’s attention has been focussed on meeting the auld enemy again and even though only Tom Hildreth and Carl Alsop from the original World Cup squad made it into the team there was no doubting the motivation!

Although not taking anything for granted the England team were confident and ready for a tough battle.  From the whistle the English side tore into the Scots and the hard work which has been put in by the England squad paid off handsomely as they totally outclassed the Scots in every department – teamwork, communication, tactics, blocking and shooting.  At the first break England had overwhelmed their opponents and went in 64-19 ahead.  The Scots were fighting hard and blocking well but England maintained the pressure and went into half time having built up a comfortable lead of 81 points. They continued to overwhelm the Scots  and finished the match at 233-116, smashing the World Record for the highest score in a match in the process.

The teams had a break before the next game which allowed the shell-shocked Scots to re-evaluate their tactics – but their efforts were in vain.  England carried on where they left off and went into the first break of the second game leading 71-28.  The English team totally dominated the match with an awesome power play leaving the Scots not knowing which way to turn as the English tactics and teamwork allowed them to record another record-breaking score as they continued to build their lead and again smashed the record they’d just set to win the second match 254-118 and lead the series 2-0.

The final game was fast and furious as the Scots fought hard to finish on a high – and indeed they managed to both reduce England’s total and take more points off them, however it wasn’t enough and England won the final match 243-130 to take the series 3-0.

IRIBF Commissioner Craig Buttery was delighted with the matches: “It is fantastic to have had the first friendly international.  We hope that the next time these two sides meet it will be in the Home Nations Championships and then in the World Cup.  Those games today were a fantastic spectacle and I know the Scots will be much harder to beat next time, but all credit to England for the work they have put in with their coach Paul Reed, for that was an absolutely outstanding display!”

Hall of Fame

The Rock-It-Ball Hall of Fame is the highest award that can be bestowed in Rock-It-Ball.  Two members of the IRIBF are to be inducted in 2008, 2010 and 2012 after which it is intended that the award will be made on an annual basis.

The award is intended to honour those people who have made an ongoing, consistent and outstanding contribution to the development of Rock-It-Ball.  The process goes through two stages: nominations are received by IRIBF members. Anyone receiving three nominations then progresses to consideration by committee, however even if only one person makes it to committee stage this is no guarantee of induction as the committee has to agree that the contribution is outstanding and consistent enough to warrant the inclusion.

This year three people received the required 3 nominations to proceed to committee stage. Unusually the committee felt unable to differentiate between the three outstanding nominees and therefore voted to treat the 2010 awards as ‘exceptional circumstances’, voting to induct all three nominees.

Carl Alsop

Since first being introduced to the sport Carl's effort has been unstinting, supportive and enthusiastic.  He has been instrumental in the development of Rock-It-Ball in the Air Cadet organisation, setting up two teams for participation in the national league and organising the first Air Cadets tournament, working hard to propagate the sport through other squadrons.  On top of this he has established another successful club (York) which features teams in the senior league and junior pairs league.  As well as this Carl works as part of ERIBA, is an international player, and has also taken on the role of International Development Manager for the IRIBF.  Carl is also a key figure in the organisation of the ENRL Yorkshire and Humber region and the v3 tournaments.
As with everyone else Carl works as a volunteer alongside his day job but the amount of time and effort he puts in is second to none and has been consistent from the moment he was introduced to the sport.

Ian Crosby
Since first seeing Rock-It-Ball Ian has been a great servant to the sport.  In his role as CEO of the England Rock-It-Ball Association Ian has done sterling work to move the Association forward and to grow the sport of Rock-It-Ball.  He has been a dedicated and consistent servant of the sport, working to promote the sport on both a local and national level. He has some very innovative ideas and is working very hard to increase the profile of the sport in the North West and across the country.  He has been a great ambassador for Rock-It-Ball and continues to put in an immense effort alongside his day job

Graeme Wood
Graeme has been a dedicated and faithful friend of Rock-It-Ball from the moment he got involved.
He became part of the England program and an important part of the IRIBF, heading up the coaching and umpiring side of the sport.
Alongside this, as part of his role as a teacher, he did a lot of unnoticed work to spread and establish Rock-It-Ball in his local area. More recently, in his new role, he has been making great efforts to help spread Rock-It-Ball through the Extended Services provision with a view to it spreading nationwide.
Graeme's work is ongoing, consistent and effective.  What is most noticeable is that he quietly gets on with the job of promoting the sport of Rock-It-Ball without any shouting about it.  His work is often unseen but no less important or effective.
